Highdown Gardens
The result of 50 years work by
Sir Frederick and Lady Stern to prove that plants could grow
on chalk, Highdown Gardens were created out of a chalk pit
over-looking the South Downs. With many rare and original
plants from China and the Himalayan regions still in the
collection, the gardens offer one of the most unique
collections of plants in the area.

St John the Divine, Patching
Dating from the thirteenth
century, Patching Church is under the patronage of the
Archbishop of Canterbury. Restored in 1889 by Henry Woodyer,
the church still retains a great deal of its Victorian
charm. Features include a medieval font, carved wooden
pulpit with fifteenth-century panels and exceptional stained
glass windows. The oak vestry screen made by Frank Latter is
dedicated to the Rector between 1904 and 1909, Reverend H.
S. Prior. There is a restored fifteenth-century weather vane
and a number of memorials to local farming families as
opposed to the more usual gentry.

St Mary, Sompting
This Saxon church is unique in
England. It features a tower common to the Rhine area of
Germany with a 'Rhenish helm' garbled cap though oak
shingles cover the original Saxon gables. The Knights
Templars rebuilt the nave and chancel in 1154 and the
chancel arch is an important example of Saxon architecture.
